How to build a sustainable VA business
It's been over 5 years since I took that scary first step towards becoming a VA. It was Feb 2016 and I handed my notice in at my last proper job at an investment bank.
I was so relieved when I did it & in April that year I basically skipped out of that place & never looked back!
Although I didn't give it much thought at the time, my main driving force for leaving was building a business for the long run. That meant not burning out & giving up 6 months later but instead visioning the life I wanted for years to come.
I had a pretty bumpy start (hello crap rates on UpWork & other scaredy cat moves) but I got my shit together & now I'm all about building sustainable business models for VAs.
If you're thinking long term too, here are 5 places to start:
1 - Get crystal clear on what you want from your business from the beginning. I had no idea other than 'I don't want to work in an office again' so I ended up creating another job for myself
2 - Make decisions from a place of positivity, not fear. I was underprepared & jumped from panicky strategy to just plain old panic!
3 - Think carefully about your rates. Honestly, do the work around your money mindset & thank me later!
4 - Be consistent. It takes weeks and months so build a strong marketing strategy & you've just got to stick at it (and enjoy it along the way!)
5 - Circle back to your goals and dreams. This is the fastest way to check that you're making the right decisions & sticking to your strategy long-term.
So tell me; are you after a rollercoaster ride or a smooth canal boat ride?
