A VA's guide to lead magnets

Email lists…..automation…..lead magnets…..

There’s a lot of new stuff to learn when you start a VA business, and you might find that clients ask for help with something you’ve never heard of before. Last week I gave a rundown of email marketing (you can read that post here) and one of the things I mentioned was lead magnets. So today I’ll be diving into exactly what a lead magnet is and how you can help clients with one.

What’s a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is essentially something that attracts potential clients or customers. It can be a guide (eg. 5 ways to lose weight) or a free lesson (eg. my client attraction lesson) or pretty much anything else of value. The purpose of a lead magnet is for businesses to grow their email list, so a potential customer would enter their details to receive the lead magnet, and then it will be up to the business to email them after that.

What types of clients use them?

Any client or business can use them. You’ll see a lot of them in the coaching / mentoring space, but pretty much any business can use them. It’s a good way of learning more about the business / business owner before you buy from them, and also learning something for free. Restaurants and clothing brands sometimes offer discounts for new customers, so that’s a type of lead magnet too.

How do you make one?

One of the easiest and cost effective ways to make a PDF format lead magnet is in Canva. It’s completely free and easy to use, so if you haven’t had a play around with it yet I’d highly recommend it. There are even lead magnet style templates on Canva if you don’t want to make one from scratch.

Alternatively if the lead magnet is an email series such as a 5 day challenge, the emails would be written and added to an automation sequence on an email marketing tool, and perhaps a pop-up Facebook group created for the period of the challenge and the launch, if there is one.

How does it connect to email marketing?

This is the most common lead magnet workflow:

  • Business promotes lead magnet on social media

  • Customer signs up and details therefore added to email marketing tool

  • Automated email sent delivering the lead magnet

  • Customer is then added to an automated email sequence (perhaps a nurture sequence or a live launch sequence)

How can a VA support a client with a lead magnet?

You could create the lead magnet, schedule social media posts promoting it, schedule emails, create an automated email sequence, manage a Facebook community, support a launch…..the list goes on!

I hope you’ve found this article helpful. There will always be new things to learn but as long as you’re open to picking up new skills and maintaining a curious approach to your business then you’ll just keep soaring!
